Abertay University makes sustainable procurement pledge

Policy to bring long-term benefit for local economy and environment

Abertay University鈥檚 sustainable procurement approach has made responsible purchasing a central part of its strategy for the future.

Guided by the , the University鈥檚 approach aims to create long-term value, benefiting society, the economy and the environment.

Sustainable procurement at Abertay focuses on more than just costs鈥 it prioritises long-term value by considering the lifecycle of products and services. This 鈥渨hole life鈥 approach helps the University fulfil its goal of reducing environmental impact while fostering positive economic and social outcomes.

By embedding sustainability into every stage of procurement, Abertay is able to source ethically, reduce waste and promote sustainable practices throughout its supply chain. The University also recognises that sustainable procurement is not just environmentally responsible鈥攊t鈥檚 a form of best practice procurement that contributes to its wider commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility.

Central to this strategy is inclusivity and support for local businesses, with the University engaging with the third sector and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to open up opportunities for these organisations to contribute to a stable and diverse economy.

Products that are energy-efficient, made from recycled materials and have a low impact on natural resources are prioritised where possible. This supports a wider strategy to decrease reliance on new materials, cut down on waste and foster a culture of reuse, repair and recycling.

Environmental considerations are integrated from planning through contract management, with a focus on working collaboratively with suppliers to improve environmental performance. Procurement documentation is developed with transparency, clarity and accessibility in mind, ensuring all tendering conditions are appropriate and inclusive.

The University鈥檚 key sustainability goals are to influence its supply chain, increase reliance on local and ethical products, and continually reduce waste and emissions. Objectives also include increasing the use of renewable energy and energy-efficient products, and sourcing ethically traded goods wherever possible.

Abertay advertises tendering opportunities publicly and, where possible, uses Prior Information Notices (PINs) to alert the market, ensuring equal opportunity to compete for business and encouraging broader engagement.

These objectives not only minimise Abertay鈥檚 environmental footprint but also support local economies and social wellbeing, contributing to a sustainable future for the wider community.

Head of Procurement, Rhonda McKay said:
