Adapting Tabletop Interactivity for Digital Storytelling

Synopsis

Dungeons & Dragons: Paragon is a single player video game adaptation of the tabletop Dungeons and Dragons ruleset, created as part of my Game Design course at Abertay University. The aim of this project is to explore the idea of a digital 鈥楪ame Master鈥 agent, and to create a roleplaying game that actively reacts to player actions, dynamically shaping the story and making each playthrough unique.

The game is published under the "Fan Content Policy" (https://company.wizards.com/en/legal/fancontentpolicy) and uses the ruleset from the " D&D Open-Gaming License" (https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/systems-reference-document-srd).

鈥淒ungeons & Dragons: Paragon鈥 is unofficial Fan Content permitted under the Fan Content Policy. Not approved/endorsed by Wizards. Portions of the materials used are property of Wizards of the Coast. 漏Wizards of the Coast LLC.

Adapting Tabletop Interactivity for Digital Storytelling

The aim of this project was to study interactivity in video games by incorporating elements of tabletop roleplaying games, focussing on the idea of a digital ‘Game Master’ agent.

Motivation

I have been developing content for tabletop games for years and I have always been fascinated by the way that players can come together and create a story in a dynamic fashion. I wanted to try to recreate that feeling by creating a video game prototype that will adjust the story as the player plays through it.
