Do-it-FOR-Yourself – representing punks through visual storytelling

In the beginning, the punk subculture was a welcoming space for all outed by society: queers, women and people that were simply different. As the movement rose in popularity, it became a violent and white male dominated space. Mainstream media have twisted the image of the subculture by focusing on its violent side and portraying punks as unintelligent, intoxicated criminals and washing them of their ethics, politics and activism. The queer-feminist movement arose as a way to reclaim that punk space for everyone once again. This project focuses on that movement as an alternative representation of the punk subculture. Joining together visual art theory and punk ethics, it presents a story of a queer punk struggling with his identity and clashing against the modern society. It is presented in a form of a zine designed for print using digital, traditional and mixed media.

Do-it-FOR-Yourself – representing punks through visual storytelling

In a form of a zine, using visual storytelling and illustration, this project explores and presents the queer-feminist movement within the punk subculture.

Motivation

As a queer, gender non-conforming person, I want my artistic practice to continuously contribute as a voice encouraging creating a safe, inclusive LGBTQ+ community. Through this project, I aim to draw more attention to a significant part of queer history, and invite others to learn about punk ethics and hopefully even adapt some of them as a way to empower and increase the agency over their own lives.
