Examining the Representation of LGBT Men in All-Ages Media

I am writing, illustrating and editing a picture book aimed at young-to-pre-teen children with the goal of representing gay men in children鈥檚 media. I want to do this in a harmless, positive and entertaining way by using drag, a massive part of gay culture and history, as a primary storytelling tool.

The story follows Dopie, a cat who was adopted by a drag queen, as she tries to set up her 鈥渄ad鈥 with her 鈥渕um鈥 鈥 not knowing they鈥檙e the same person. She鈥檚 on a tight schedule; dad鈥檚 new friend Ron is getting a bit too comfortable, and mum is around less and less because of it. Dopie recounts her efforts as a collection of diary entries and thoughts about the perfect family she believes they could be.

Examining the Representation of LGBT Men in All-Ages Media

A book to help normalise the existence of LGBT men in children’s media. Starring a cat and her Drag Queen human, who she believes to be two people.

Motivation

I noticed an absence of my LGBT brothers in all-ages media, and want to work towards fixing that.
